2007 Sydney Motor Show:Second Generation Smart Fortwo of Mercedes-Benz
As the Second Generation Mercedes-Benz Smart Fortwo’s debut on 2007 Sydney Motor Show two days ago, it dedicate that Mercedes-Benz’s ongoing support for its mini-car brand.
“We wanted our customers to know there is a firm commitment to the Smart brand in Australia,” said Mercedes-Benz car group managing director Horst van Sanden. “A lot of people kept asking us over the last year are you really committed to Smart, are you going to continue?
“I think there was an expectation that we might drop the Smart… but we are here and we are here to stay.”
The second iteration of the Smart two-seater coupe and cabrio will go on-sale here in February 2008. While quite similar in appearance to the original, the new Smart Fortwo is longer and wider and has traded its 0.7-litre three-cylinder engine in for a more powerful 1.0-litre.
There are both narurally-aspirated and turbocharged versions of this engine and what makes it to Australia is still being sorted out. Pricing, is not expected to rise far from the current level, which is $19,900 for the coupe and $22,900 for the cabrio.
